Larsen sheet piling: classification, characteristics and application

The Larsen tongue and groove is a metal product in the form of a groove, which is characterized by rounded edges and Larsen-type locks at the ends. The profiles, thanks to tongue-and-groove locks, adhere to each other and form a solid barrier to strengthen unstable walls.

They use the Larsen sheet pile in many industrial areas, ranging from strengthening the banks of reservoirs of different areas and depths, ending with fencing the walls of construction trenches and pits. In addition, this metal profile is relevant if it is necessary to protect the slopes of excavations from collapse, flooding of pits and to prevent soil movement between the working area and the surrounding area, for example, at a construction site or a mining site.

A metal profile with Larsen type locks is classified, based on the type of lock, section and manufacturer.

Depending on the type of lock, this metal profile can be produced in the following models:
  • Larsen tongue and groove with U-shaped lock (trough-shaped tongue and groove) - AU, PU, GU models differing in the number of sections. The AU sheet pile is wide and lightweight, the PU models have reinforced shoulders, and the GU models are a lightweight version of the trough profile;
  • Larsen tongue and groove with Z-shaped lock - AZ models are characterized by a larger width, which reduces the total number of locks, but at the same time increases the area of the fence. Such models have a high moment of inertia with reduced deflection, increased bearing capacity, an optimal ratio of the total weight of the product and the moment of resistance;
  • Larsen sheet piling with S-shaped lock (flat sheet piles) - AS models are designed for the organization of closed metal structures in the form of a cylinder. This is important for carrying out work when it is impossible to organize anchoring.
You can find the following profile models with Larsen locks:
  • Larsen sheet piling HSP - a metal product from a manufacturer from Germany. It is characterized by high strength indicators and increased bearing capacity. Equipped with an improved version of the lock, due to which an even higher level of tightness of the profile wall is achieved. The Larsen sheet pile HSP is especially in demand in the organization of sewer tunnels, as well as for the construction of waste workers in the chemical and nuclear industries. This series of sheet piles has 40 models, differing in strength indicators;
  • the Larsen sheet piling of the VL series is a profile of the L series of a manufacturer from the Czech Republic. The Larsen sheet pile of the L series is distinguished by thinner walls. It is made by hot-rolled method from unalloyed steels and is characterized by high strength and wear resistance. This series of sheet piles has more than 15 models;
  • Larsen sheet piling LP series - the most budgetary series of trough-shaped profile. Recommended for use in any work up to a depth of 6 m. It is characterized by a sufficient moment of resistance for use on coastlines, pits and trenches. It is a good alternative to heavy dowel piles on sites where the dowel itself remains in the ground.
In cross-sectional shape, the Larsen sheet pile can be:
  • Z-shaped Larsen tongue at an angle of 90 ° or 63 °;
  • trough-shaped Larsen sheet piling;
  • flat sheet pile Larsen;
  • I-beam Larsen sheet pile;
  • Larsen tubular sheet piling;
  • combined Larsen sheet pile (trough-shaped and I-beam complex).
The Larsen sheet pile is made of high-strength steels S430GP / 1.0523, S390GP / 1.0522, S355J0C / 1.0554, S355GP / 1.0083, S320GP / 1.0046, S270GP, S235JR, S355JO, etc.
Depending on the manufacturing method, Larsen sheet piles can be:
  • hot-rolled - sheet piles produced by heating a workpiece (usually a steel strip) and running it on rolling mills to obtain metal products of specified geometric parameters;
  • cold-deformed - sheet piles, which are obtained by rolling cold steel billets on special mills;
  • welded - dowels, in which individual parts are welded into a one-piece structure;
  • rolled-welded - sheet piles, the individual components of which are obtained by cold rolling, and the remaining parts in the form of steel strips are welded together.
The standard sizes of Larsen sheet piling that manufacturers offer are as follows:
  • length - from 4 to 34 meters;
  • width - up to 54 cm;
  • wall thickness - up to mm
Standards EN 10248 and EN 1993-5 regulate the tolerances, markings, tests, dimensions of the Larsen tongue and groove.

Installation and dismantling of Larsen sheet piling

Given the length of the product, the Larsen sheet pile is installed in three ways:

  • clogging is the fastest way to install. It is carried out using a pile driver with a percussion mechanism. The impact force during driving depends on the geometric parameters of the profile itself and the general condition of the soil on which the work is performed. It is not recommended to use the method of blocking the city limits, because the vibration effect on the soil destroys the integrity of the foundations of nearby buildings;
  • vibration immersion - this technology is optimal as an alternative to clogging. Vibration immersion is also used for mounting sheet piles on viscous and silty soils and in water. The process of installing the tongue is as follows: the tongue is attached with slings to the vibration part of a special machine, and the installation, creating vibration, presses on the product, ensuring immersion in the ground due to low-frequency vibrations applied to it. This method does not have such a strong effect on the surrounding landscape as hammering, but it is not recommended to use it in conditions of dense building;
  • indentation is the most gentle method of installing the Larsen sheet piling, which is allowed for use in urban areas with high building density. The process is carried out using a tracked pile-pressing installation or an IED. The tongue is vertically fixed to the mobile device of the IED and immersed in the ground to a given depth. This method of installing the sheet pile is good in that there is no effect on the foundations of nearby buildings, and there is no violation of the density of the soil.
In addition to the three main methods, a combined one can occur - indentation plus vibration immersion.

Dismantling of the Larsen sheet pile is as follows: the sheet pile is fixed to a vibration unit on the crane and a vibration generator is started, which gradually increases the pulling force until the metal profile is fully raised.
Properties and application of Larsen sheet piling

For the production of Larsen sheet piling, high-strength steel grades with a high carbon content and the addition of vanadium are used to increase the strength characteristics.

The Larsen sheet pile is made of high-strength steels S430GP / 1.0523, S390GP / 1.0522, S355J0C / 1.0554, S355GP / 1.0083, S320GP / 1.0046, S270GP, S235JR, S355JO, etc.

Due to the properties of raw materials and the peculiarities of its design, Larsen sheet piling is characterized by:
  • increased strength and tightness;
  • corrosion resistance;
  • resistance to oxidative processes;
  • resistance to intense mechanical stress;
  • resistance to salt sea water;
  • easy fixation and easy installation;
  • the ability to turn the wall during installation;
  • use on any soil of a viscous, silty, clayey consistency);
  • long service life.
It should be noted that the Larsen sheet pile is a reusable metal product. It is able to withstand several immersions and notches without loss of properties, while meeting all technological requirements of the standards.

The main industrial areas that are characterized by the use of Larsen sheet piling are:
  • strengthening of the banks;
  • installation of dams, dams, locks, berths;
  • reinforcing fencing of foundation pits;
  • strengthening of construction trenches;
  • organization of treatment sites and landfills;
  • strengthening of walls of tunnels and highways.
