AVAILABLE STEEL GRADES
Steel I-beams are profiles with a cross-section comparable to the letter "H". Structurally, they consist of shelves, upper and lower, united by a wall. The shelves are located both in parallel planes and have an internal slope. I-beams are produced using hot rolled products. The alloy goes through several stages of broaching on square billet machines and then crushed into products of the required size.

In the manufacture of beams, a combination of different types of European standardized steel is used, namely:
  • ordinary and high quality alloyed - 1.0038 (S235JR), 1.0044 (S275JR), 1.0045 (S355JR), 1.0143 (S275J0), 1.0145 (S275J2), 1.0491 (S275NL), 1.0553 (S355J0), 1.0577 (S355J2), 1.05NL 1.0590 (S450J0);
  • unalloyed high quality weldable - 1.8819 (S275ML), 1.8834 (S355ML).
This symbiosis allows the production of profiles with high mechanical properties. I-beams are corrosion-resistant, deep-annealed, they are not afraid of wear and high temperatures. In addition, one of the main functions of I-beams is to accept and evenly distribute loads in metal structures.

Among the main areas of application for steel I-beams:
  • car building;
  • bridge building;
  • automotive industry;
  • railway construction, etc.
The widespread use of I-beams is determined by their physical properties, cross-sectional shape and high technical characteristics.

I-beams, like channels, and corners are one of the most common types of complex rolled metal products. At the same time, the assortment of the I-beams themselves is quite wide.

European standard I-beams are divided into:
  • wide-shelf - HEA (IPB I), HEB (IPB / IB), HEM (IPB V);
  • normal - IPE, IPN (INP);
  • special - HL (HLZ), HD, HP;
  • universal - UB, UC, UBP, J.
I-beams HEA (IPB I), HEB (IPB / IB), HEM (IPB V) - hot-rolled steel H-sections with wide parallel flanges. The design of metal products allows them to be used in large-scale construction. The features of this type of beams include stability to bending and compression, stability and rigidity.

In accordance with physical indicators, profiles are divided into several types:

  • lightweight - HEA (IPB I), their weight starts from 16.7 kg / m;
  • reinforced - HEB (IPB / IB), weight from 20 kg / m. The width of the flanges of the beam and its height are conditionally equal;
  • heavy - HEM (IPB V), minimum weight - 41.8 kg / m. The thickness of the shelves is greater than that of other steel I-beam products, and the shelf width of the product is less than the height of the wall.
Beams are regulated:

  • by size - EN 10365 * (DIN 1025-2, -3, -4);
  • limit deviations - EN 10034;
  • for surface quality requirements - EN 10163-3 - class C, subclass 1.
I-beams IPE, IPN (INP) - made of alloyed and unalloyed steel of European quality, beams of normal type.

Depending on the position of the shelves, there are two variations of these profiles:
  • with parallel shelves - IPE;
  • with a slope of the inner edges of the shelves - IPN (INP).
Beam IPE and beam IPN (INP) are able to provide maximum structural stability and resist lateral bending. Therefore, they are most often used in the construction of the bearing part of metal structures.

Beams are regulated:
  • by size - EN 10365 * (DIN 1025-2);
  • limit deviations - EN 10034 (for IPE), EN 10024 (for IPN);
  • for surface quality requirements - EN 10163-3 - class C, subclass 1.
I-beams HL (HLZ), HD, HP refer to special beams and according to European standards are classified as:
  • extended wide-shelf - HL (HLZ). The profile is elongated, with a height almost twice its width.
  • The minimum value of the mass is 344 kg / m;
Columns - HD.

They are characterized by wide parallel shelves. The width of the product exceeds its height. Product weight - from 54.1 kg / m; wide-flange bearing piles - HP. The relative height and width of the product are equal, the weight is from 42.5 kg / m.

Beams are regulated:
  • by size - EN 10365 *, ASTM A 6 / A 6M-12;
  • limit deviations - EN 10034 (for all), ASTM A 6 / A 6M-07 (for HD), ASTM A 6 / A 6M-12 (for HL (HLZ);
  • for surface quality requirements - class C, subclass 1 - EN 10163-3.
I-beams UB, UC, UBP, J - universal profiles - one of the varieties of long products.

According to British standards, there are:
  • normal (normal) - UB. The lightest product weighs 13 kg / m and measures 127x27 mm;
  • columns - UC. They are characterized by equal height and width, as well as weight from 23 kg / m;
  • wide-flange bearing piles - UBP. The shape of the I-beams is close to an isosceles square. The lightest of them weighs 44.9 kg / m;
  • with sloped shelves - J. The minimum value of the mass of the goods is 12.8 kg / m.
Beams are regulated:

by size - BS 4-1, ASTM A 6 / A 6M-12;
limit deviations - EN 10034 (for UC and UPB), EN 10024 (for J);
for surface quality requirements - class C, subclass 1 - EN 10163-3.

* - EN 10365 combines all sections of the DIN 1025 standard, previously regulating the parameters of steel profiles

ASTM Steel I-Beam Specification

The following H-shaped profiles are available in accordance with the American Society of Testing and Materials guidelines:
  • wide-flanged - W. They have parallel edges, the assortment of beams begins with a product with parameters 106x103 mm and a weight of 19.3 kg / m;
  • normal (ordinary) - S. I-beams of this type have inclined edges of shelves, the minimum weight category is 8.5 kg / m, height - 46 mm, width - 59 mm.
  • wide-flange bearing piles - HP. The size of the profile flanges exceeds its height; the lightest beam in this category weighs no more than 43 kg / m.
Steel beams W, S, HP are regulated by ASTM A 6 / A 6M - 12 standards in terms of size, limit deviations, and surface quality requirements.

Application of steel I-beams

Due to the increased strength and stability, H-shaped steel profiles are indispensable in the formation of load-bearing metal structures, for the construction of public facilities (clinics, recreation centers, retail outlets), special communications (overhead tracks and crossings), and special purposes (mines and bridges).

Among the main areas of application for steel I-beams:
  • car building;
  • bridge building;
  • automotive industry;
  • railway construction, etc.
The widespread use of I-beams is determined by their physical properties, cross-sectional shape and high technical characteristics.
