Round steel pipes according to EN, API and ASTM standards

Round steel pipes are a type of rolled metal, which is characterized by a round cross-section. Due to their round shape, steel pipes have increased aerodynamic properties.

For the production of steel round pipes, alloyed / unalloyed, structural, high-quality unalloyed / alloyed, carbon steel grades are used, which are characterized by high physical, mechanical and thermal properties, for example, 16Mo3 / 1.5415, S235JRH / 1.0039, C35E / 1.1181, Gr. P91, E255 / 1.0408, TP304, etc.

Round steel pipes are made in two ways, which affects their classification:
  • welded - round pipes that are made by electric welding. A steel billet, it can be a strip or sheet, is bent into a pipe shape and welded with a longitudinal seam. Depending on the design of the seam, round electrically welded pipes can be: spiral seam pipes and longitudinal seam pipes. Note that spiral seam round pipes are more durable than longitudinal seam pipes, because the spiral seam eliminates the possibility of cracking. Straight seam round pipes are recommended for use in general tasks, such as laying a water supply system. Welded round pipes are regulated by ASTM A53, ASTM A333, ASTM A671, ASTM A672, EN 10296;
  • seamless - round pipes that do not have a weld. The production technology consists in heating the steel billet (strip, sheet, strip), bending it into a pipe shape and passing it through the rolls of the rolling mill. After that, the workpiece is adjusted to the required geometric parameters (length, diameter, wall thickness). During rolling, the future round pipe can be cold or hot, which divides round seamless pipes into cold-deformed and hot-deformed ones. The main advantage of seamless pipes over welded counterparts is the absence of a weld seam, which ensures uniformly high hermetic performance along the entire length of the pipe. Seamless round pipes are recommended both for solving general problems and for use in critical areas or for operation in pipelines transporting "difficult" working media at high speed, high / low temperatures and under pressure, for example, in oil and gas pipelines. Seamless round pipes are regulated by the standards ASTM A53, ASTM A106, ASTM A213, ASTM A333, ASTM A334, ASTM A335.

Also, steel round pipes are classified according to the installation method:
  • pipes with expanded / narrowed ends;
  • upset pipes;
  • rifled pipes.
  • Depending on the wall thickness:
  • round thin-walled pipes - wall thickness up to 1.5 mm;
  • round thick-walled pipes - wall thickness from 1.5 mm.
Depending on the type of pipe:
  • round pipes for mechanical engineering - regulated by the EN 10297-1 standard;
  • round pipes for work under pressure - regulated by the standard EN 10217-1, -2, -3, -4, -5, -6, EN 10216-1, -2, -3, -4;
  • round structural pipes - regulated by the standards EN 10210, EN 10219;
  • round main pipes - regulated by the API 5L standard;
  • round precision tubes - regulated by the standard EN 10305-1, -2, -3, -4, -6.
The dimensions of seamless and electrowelded round pipes according to EN, API and ASTM standards are as follows:
  • wall thickness - from 0.5 to 100 mm (for welded pipes up to 40 mm);
  • outer diameter - from 4 to 3657.6 mm;
  • inner diameter - from 1.6 to 364 mm.
Properties and applications of round pipes according to EN, API and ASTM standards
Steel tubular products with a circular cross-section are characterized by high technical properties, which makes it possible to operate round tubes for solving general and special problems.

In addition to high aerodynamic performance, round steel pipes are characterized by:
  • high strength and tightness of the structure;
  • light weight;
  • resistance to corrosion, oxidative processes;
  • resistance to external destruction (moisture, UV rays);
  • resistance to shock and mechanical deformation;
  • resistance to temperature and pressure drops;
  • long service life.
The main consumers of round pipes according to EN, API and ASTM standards are:
  • oil and gas and chemical industry;
  • construction and metallurgy;
  • hydraulics and power engineering;
  • machine building, shipbuilding and machine tool building;
  • processing complexes and pumping stations;
  • housing and communal sector and agriculture etc.
